What ages does your league accommodate?

Our leagues are 8 and under, 9 and under, 10 and under, 11 and under, 12 and under and 14 and under. Children 6 and 7 may play in our 8 and under league. No child who hasn't turned 6 before August 1st of the current season will be permitted to play. August 1st of the current year is the age cutoff date for all leagues. For example, if a boy turned 9 on or after August 1 of the current year, he could still play in our 8 and under league.

When are sign-ups?

We don’t have a specific sign up date. If you have a team that you want to enter in the league, please call or email the boys coordinator in September and you will be put on a list of teams that want to play. Once the coordinator determines how many spots he has open for new teams, he will notify the teams who have contacted him. If you have an individual player that you want to get involved, please call or email the coordinator and he will place your child’s name on a list of “call-in” players. At the coaches meeting in October he will assign as many of the call-in players as possible to teams that have fewer than ten players on the rosters or projected rosters. If we have enough call-ins in a given age group, we will merely form a new team with those kids as long as someone volunteers to coach them.

What is the cost?

Satellite Athletic Association charges each boy on a Satellite team $35.00 per season. Your son’s team may or may not have additional charges for practice time, tournaments, etc. You should discuss the expected costs with your son’s coach at the start of the season. In addition to the player fee, there are gate charges of $2.00 per adult and $1.00 for seniors to attend each game.

When does the season start?

We’ll have a coaches meeting in mid-October each year. Many teams will start practicing in late October or early November. Teams will play two preseason games for bracketing purposes in Mid-November and the league usually starts the first weekend in December. The league will end toward the end of February and a post season tournament is played immediately after league play in completed.

How many games will each team play?

Each team will play at least 12 league games and 2 preseason games. There will be a league post-season tournament available on the end of the league season.

What league do Satellite teams play in?

SAA teams participate in the Northwest Basketball Association (NBA). The league consists of teams from Satellite, Putnam City Optimists, Yukon Optimists, Piedmont Sports Association, Optimist Club of Mustang and El Reno. There are normally enough teams to have anywhere from three to five divisions in each age group which gives each team an opportunity to compete against teams of similar ability.

Where are the games played?

Satellite teams will play their home games at the Satellite Gym, 3939 NW 57 in Oklahoma City. Their “away” games will be determined by where the teams in their division are from. PCO plays at Mayfield Middle School (NW 16th and Purdue) and other sites are located in Yukon, Piedmont, Mustang and El Reno. Your team coach will provide each parent a list of gym locations.

What days of the week are games played?

Games during the regular league season are normally on Thursday and Friday evenings, all day Saturdays and Sunday afternoons. Games during the pre-season or post-season tournaments could be any night of the week.

What are the qualifications of the coaches?

Most of the coaches are volunteers that usually have a son on the team. Some of the coaches are knowledgeable about basketball and some are not. Some of the coaches have varying degrees of basketball playing experience and some have none. It is up to each parent to get involved and familiarize yourself with the coach and determine if the coach is suitable for your child.

What playing rules does the league follow?

Our league uses the National Federation High School rules as our guideline, however we do have exceptions that we feel are appropriate for each age group. Your coach can furnish you a copy of the rules.
